What character set to choose?

Vietnamese characters are available in Unicode and many other 8-bit character sets such as VISCII, VPS, VNI, ABC, DHBK, etc. In general Unicode is the best choice because it is supported by Windows and you can use any Microsoft fonts such as Arial, Courier, Times New Roman, etc. The obvious benefit is you can exchange documents with other people without the need for them to install additional fonts. The TriChlor Group has also released a number of Unicode fonts whose names begin with 'VU' (Vietnamese Unicode) such as 'VU AnhMinh', 'VU MinhQuan', etc. These fonts have the look and feel of the VISCII fonts that have similar names.

Unicode is available in

Southeast Asian languages, such as Thai and Vietnamese, might not be compatible with every search option in Microsoft Office. For example, the Match case and Find whole words only options do not work for Southeast Asian characters. However, these options can still be used to find matching Latin characters in the same document.
